The Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship, the most prominent higher education scholarship program provided by the Hungarian Government, offers a choice of courses for international students with outstanding academic records. The scholarship aims to strengthen linkages between academic and research communities in different nations, promote Hungary's high position and competitiveness abroad, and promote the globalization and continued growth of higher education in Hungary. 

The program, which was started by the Hungarian government in 2013, is managed by the Tempus Public Foundation and is under the direction of the ministry of foreign affairs and commerce.

Based on bilateral education agreements between Hungary and the sending countries, it is already provided in roughly 70 countries across five continents and enrolls more than 5000 foreign students each year. Applicants have access to more than 500 full degree programs that cover every field of higher education and all degree levels, including part-time and doctoral programs.

The following advantages are available to winners of Hungary Government Scholarships under the STIPENDIUM HUNGARICUM program:

  • Free tuition and a monthly stipend 
  • Until the end of the academic year, a monthly contribution of HUF 43,700 (about EUR 130) to cover living expenses in Hungary is required. 
  • Doctoral level: Every current Hungarian law, the monthly scholarship amount is HUF 140 000 (about EUR 450) for the first phase of education (4 semesters) and HUF 180 000 (roughly EUR 580) for the second phase of education (4 semesters) - for 12 months per year, till the end of studies.
  • For the duration of the scholarship period, free housing or a monthly payment of HUF 40.000 to cover housing expenses will be provided. 
  • Please be aware that the HUF 40 000 per month is a contribution to the rental costs if the student does not live in the dormitory, and that in larger cities, particularly the capital city, this contribution may not cover the full amount of rental costs.

CRITERIA FOR STIPENDIUM HUNGARICUM SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY 

The following prerequisites must be satisfied in order for candidates to be considered for Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarships:
